R filter focus 0.55 FWHM=0.5 5 imgsx60s runs; G filter focus ~0.55 FWHM=0.6-0.7 5 imgsx60s runs; B filter focus ~0.55 FWHM=0.7 5 imgsx60s Halpha focus 0.72 (difficult!) FWHM=1.5 15 imgsx60. All runs taken with dithers. Composite RGB image (Deepskystacker + gimp + rawtherapee) and with a touch of wavelets (Registax). N left, E up.

The Great Conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn

Description: This image of an unusually-close conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn was obtained on 21 Dec 2020, during tests of the new optical corrector at the prime focus of the William Herschel Telescope (WHT). The image is a composite of exposures taken with a CMOS camera, through blue, green and red filters.

Processing with Autostakkert (50 % best selection, alignment 3x drizzle, stacking), Registax (wavelet sharpening), convert (colour composition), gimp (blue level reduction). Seeing at the time probably about 0.7 arc-seconds.

Description: M74, a spiral galaxy similar to our own, seen face-on, at a distance of 30 million light years. Images obtained on 2020-11-06,07 using the filters RGBHa: R (5x60s y 1x100s), G (4x5s, 5x60s, 1x100s), B(5x5s, 1x10s, 5x60s, 1x100s) and Halpha (10x10s, 15x60s y 2x100s). DeepSkyStacker and Photoshop for layer combination (RGB + luminance Halpha+R) and adjustment of levels, curves, color balance... Cosmetic refinement using LightRoom.
